Sancerre is a widebeam ‘narrowboat’ style craft, newly completed in 2014. With a length of 60 feet (18.3 metres) and a width of 11 feet (3.35 metres) she offers very spacious accommodation not available in narrowboats or most other cruisers. Although she weighs around 25 tons, handling is very easy due to the simple tiller steering, and the bowthruster for manoevering in tight spaces. The wide river Thames, with its large locks, is the ideal operating environment for a boat of this size.
Sancerre has been fitted out with the requirements of the discerning user in mind, with concentration on comfort rather than the maximising the number of berths. The focus has been on providing a ‘new house’ quality environment rather than the usual compromises on most hire boats. Entering the cabins from the rear deck the quality of the interior is immediately apparent.
Inside the boat
The Saloon (Lounge)
The saloon features leather tub chairs with integral footstools, real oak flooring and a comfy sofa (convertible to a double bed). The through-boat central heating is supplemented with a woodburner for the colder evenings, with sustainable ‘heat logs’ supplied for ease of use, to relax round or watch a film on the flatscreen HD TV. At the far end of the saloon the feature granite bar links with the kitchen, great to sit round with a drink or as a breakfast bar. The erectable table under the bar provides space for six or more diners, with chairs kept in the under-bar cupboard. The compact ‘study’ area has a desk and ipad computer with MiFi internet access (subject to reception). The audio system is compatible with most modern media.
The Galley (Kitchen)
With all-granite worktops, oak cupboards and a full-size built-in hob and oven, the galley is functional and spacious. It’s easy to forget that you’re on a boat, with standard ‘home’ facilities such as a large sink, plentiful hot water, coffee cafetieres, microwave and a built-in larder fridge. Of course, a full set of cooking, eating and drinking utensils are provided. A ‘starter pack’ containing essential cooking and drinking supplies is provided (see ‘specifications’).
The master bedroom has a superior quality king-size bed, with supplied high quality bedding, and two wardrobes. The ensuite bathroom provides privacy and comfort, and the bedroom has double doors opening out onto the bow deck for alfresco breakfasts.
The second bedroom has a flexible configuration. Subject to pre-booking, it can either provide a standard double bed or a bunk-bed arrangement for two people. Alternative arrangements for children can be supplied on request.
Sancerre has two bathrooms (one ensuite), each with a quality shower, compact basin, ‘normal’ flushing toilets and a heated towel rail.
The rear deck has been ‘squared off’ to provide a large are for alfresco dining and entertaining (table and chairs provided), one of the big pleasures of being afloat. The bow has an area for sitting, particularly quiet whilst cruising where the sounds of the ripples of the water blend with those of the wildlife.
